May Measurement Month 2019, Philippines a Simple Measure to Save Lives

The Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH) in partnership with the International Society of Hypertension, World Hypertension League, the Department of Health, the Department of Education and partners from the Local Government of the City of Manila, Omron Philippines and Servier Philippines, spearheaded the kick-off of the May Measurement Month on 30 April 2019 at the Manila City Hall.

May Measurement Month is the world’s largest free blood pressure screening initiated by the International Society of Hypertension and backed by leading scientists, clinicians and healthcare provider across the globe with common interests in hypertension research.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is considered as the biggest contributor to the development of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and premature deaths in our country. To date, cardiovascular disease remains to be the leading cause of death in the Philippines.

To help address the significantly growing numbers of hypertension cases, PSH took part in the May Measurement Month in 2017. It aimed to determine the prevalence of hypertension locally and provide proper management. This campaign was supported by the Philippine government through the issuance of Presidential Proclamation No. 1761, declaring the month of May of each year as “Hypertension Awareness Month”. Data collected in this campaign will be used to assess and identify the current problems brought about by hypertension.
