PSH 2022 May Measurement Month Kick-Off Ceremonies Held – Mmm2022 To Increase BP Awareness, Treatment and Control in the Country

To launch the 2022 MAY MEASUREMENT MONTH Campaign in the Philippines, the Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH) with the cooperation of Department of Health (DOH) and the LGU of Quezon City led by Dr. Deborah Ignacia D. Ona, PSH President, Dr. Alejandro Bimbo Diaz, Country Leader-MMM2022-Philippine Team and Dr. Arnold Benjamin C. Mina, Co-Country Leader, MMM22 held its Kick-Off Ceremonies on May 17, 2022 at Bulwagang Amoranto of City Hall of Quezon City. Said event was graced by Honorable Mayor of Quezon City, Mayor Joy Belmonte, Dr. Esperanza Arias, Quezon City Health Officer, Dr. Beverly Ho, Head of the DOH’s Health Promotion Bureau and the MMM Principal Investigator and Past President of International Society of Hypertension, Prof. Neil Poulter.

As a support to MMM2022 campaign, Mayor Belmonte announced in her solidarity message that Quezon City will aim to screen 150,000 QCitizens including senior citizens and employees of Quezon City Hall.

“Aside from the extension of the campaign period, we are putting in place measures to ensure that we are promoting awareness not just about hypertension but over all public health as well, this means making sure that throughout the campaign, our volunteers, partners and participants can join without worrying about their safety and wellness,” shared by Dr. Diaz.

This 2022, the campaign is centered on encouraging individuals to participate by monitoring their blood pressure at home. The captured data can be logged at the MMM2022 official website or at the MMM2022 mobile app. Screening sites will also be established. “We want our fellow Filipinos to be mindful of the symptoms of hypertension as they prioritize their health during these challenging times. Filipinos of all ages and across all backgrounds are susceptible to high blood pressure. The adverse effects of hypertension are what PSH and MMM are rallying to prevent” shared by Dr. Ona. Aside from raising awareness about hypertension, MMM is pushing governments to improve BP screening facilities and healthcare systems. The campaign aims to reduce the global burden of disease and death caused by high blood pressure. In the past three years, people from more than 100 countries have been screened as part of the largest free public blood pressure screening program in the world.

MMM is also in line with Presidential Proclamation No. 1761, issued on May 1, 2009 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, declaring May each year as Hypertension Awareness Month (PD 1761) and enjoining governmental and non-governmental organizations, to be major collaborators in implementing BP awareness and control programs.
